ConVINOsation: EUROVINO - trade fair for wine launches new podcast format
The logo of the new EUROVINO Podcast.
With ConVINOsation, EUROVINO - trade Fair for Wine is launching its own podcast format.

With ConVINOsation, EUROVINO is giving current expert topics within the industry an additional platform and thus creating a link with topics that also play a role in formats and discussions on site.

In the first season, host and industry expert Peter Douglas DipWSET talks to specialists about topics such as non-alcoholic wine - trends, technologies & market potential, the role of AI in the wine industry and the new EU guidelines on nutrition and content labelling for wine sales. These first three episodes - out of a total of ten - can already be heard at eurovino.info/podcast.

ConVINOsation thus provides wine producers, marketers and buyers with tips, ideas and impulses for daily practice and thus offers exhibitors and visitors to EUROVINO added value that is available at any time in the run-up to the trade fair - from the industry for the industry!

Interested in an audio sample? Start now with the first three episodes!

In the first ConVINOsation episode, the focus is on alcohol-free wine: host Peter Douglas and guest Frédéric Chouquet-Stringer from Zenotheque talk about the growth of the alcohol-free wine sector, show what needs to be done differently in the vineyard in order to produce alcohol-free wine and discuss the various technologies for dealcoholisation. They also take a look at cost and legal aspects as well as the years ahead, with Chouquet-Stringer emphasising the following with regard to alcohol-free wine: ‘It's not a magic potion, it won't completely revolutionise a winemaker's business from one day to the next, but it is a very important building block for the future.’

Episode two focuses on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI), which is currently the subject of much discussion and is also leading to changes in the wine industry. Peter Douglas and expert Dominik Durner, Professor of Food Technology and Oenology at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences / Neustadt Wine Campus, discuss the instruments behind the term AI and what impact developments in this area will have on the wine industry in the future. Durner also emphasises the importance of dealing with this topic at an early stage: ‘Today, at a good school, a winemaker must also learn how to deal with social media, websites, AI, large language models, etc. These are the topics of the future. If I don't master this today, I won't be able to sell wine tomorrow. That's the key.’

This ConVINOsation episode therefore offers a suitable opportunity for anyone who wants to get into the topic of AI in the wine industry outside of timetables or study programmes.

In the third episode, which was published yesterday, Douglas and his guest, lawyer Dr Hans Eichele, a specialist in wine and food law, discuss the new EU guidelines on nutrition and content information for wine sales. These have been in place since the end of 2023 and include the display of QR codes on bottle labels, including the provision of various information. However, they still raise questions for some industry players, which will be clarified in this episode. Eichele categorises them in this context: ‘It is true that it is now an additional burden for the industry. But the fact that we've managed to do this with the QR code makes some things easier. It's much easier to correct mistakes, you're more flexible and there's more space on the label than if you were to write everything on it. In this respect, the industry has got off lightly with the QR code.’

*****

Ten episodes are planned for the first season of ConVINOsation, which is only available in German, up to the days of the event on 9 and 10 March 2025. These will be released every two weeks on the usual streaming platforms and can be found directly at eurovino.info/podcast and on Podigee.

Around 235 exhibitors have already been confirmed for EUROVINO 2025, and visitors can now buy their tickets.

In order to better meet current challenges and questions in everyday life, EUROVINO also offers exhibitors and visitors formats and services that serve as a variety of sources of information as well as alternative presentation options and thus represent added value. These include the Wine Experience, EUROVINO's innovative tasting zone, which also includes wines from exhibitors who do not have a stand at the fair, the EUROVINO Weinguide, a digital wine database that will be successively expanded over the coming weeks to include the products of the exhibitors 2025 and will ultimately enable targeted searches within the exhibitors' broad portfolio, and the Expert Area. The latter offers visitors individual advice from experts on various industry topics, who provide relevant ideas, tips and innovative solutions for day-to-day practice. This format is deliberately designed so that interested parties can talk to the professionals at any time during EUROVINO's opening hours and are therefore not tied to a lecture program that may compete with a visit to the exhibiting wine producers and marketers.

Özdemir and Hauk assume patronage of EUROVINO 2025

Cem Özdemir, Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, and Peter Hauk, Minister of Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection Baden-Württemberg, who have both taken on the patronage of EUROVINO 2025, also emphasize the importance of a platform such as EUROVINO in the context of current challenges and the associated impetus and solutions:

“Wines from Europe are top-quality products with centuries of tradition and culture. Every drop tells its own story. It tells of unique landscapes and people, soils and climate. EUROVINO offers the wine industry an excellent platform in challenging times. For the wine industry, this means an opportunity to establish itself on the market, intensify contacts with the trade and catering trade and open up new sales channels. Trade fairs and exhibitions such as EUROVINO 2025 in Karlsruhe offer the best conditions for this - even beyond national borders. After the successful premiere of EUROVINO 2024, I wish the organisers every success for the new edition in 2025 “, explains Cem Özdemir.

And Peter Hauk points out: “Viticulture in the country is changing. The climate and consumer habits are changing. The creativity and expertise of winegrowers is needed now more than ever to prepare the industry for the future. A trade fair such as EUROVINO is a suitable platform for networking all players in the value chain: Producers, marketers and buyers of wine from the region. It is about new ideas for outstanding wines that can be produced and sold in the region in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way. Above all, we should have the courage to accompany this change positively together. The reward for this commitment is the continuation of our unique and outstanding winegrowing culture.“

Numerous people stand in front of a screen and listen to the speakers.

Palatinate winery Anselmann delivers for the tenth time as exclusive wine supplier to the German House in Paris 2024

The Anselmann vineyard from Edesheim, exhibitor at EUROVINO, is the exclusive supplier to the German House in Paris. Since 2000, Anselmann has been supplying the German houses in the Olympic cities with wine.

Anselmann wine during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the German House

Thus, during the Olympics from 26 July and the Paralympics from 28 August, the German House will be the place to celebrate both the small and the big successes with Palatinate Riesling, Pinot Blanc or Muscatel. Among other things, the German House serves as a meeting place for German athletes. The team led by owner Ralf Anselmann will be supplying a total of six varieties to the German House, which is based during the Games in Paris in the Stade Jean Bouin, a rugby and football stadium. The Team Germany Fan Zone is also located on the pitch of the Stade Jean Bouin, which will be a meeting point for German and international fans for 17 days and which will offer a varied programme including medal celebrations, public viewing and a sports area. In this area, Anselmann is also represented with five types of wine, including a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Pinot Gris, and can thus present its portfolio to visitors from all over the world.

‘We are very proud of being part of the Games in Paris with our products in the German House and the Team Germany Fan Zone. This means that every wine lover can bring a piece of the Olympics into their glass at home - also visible on our labels, which feature the Team D-logo and which are available at the vineyard or from retailers,’ explains owner Ralf Anselmann.

In March 2024, Anselmann had already presented the wines for the German House 2024 at the EUROVINO. In 2025, he will be exhibiting again at the trade fair for wine in Karlsruhe.

About the vineyard Werner Anselmann

The Anselmann family winery in Edesheim in the southern Palatinate has a vineyard area of around 150 hectares and is now run by siblings Ralf and Ruth Anselmann. The family itself have been associated with viniculture for centuries.

The vineyards are cultivated by qualified personnel with a lot of manual labour in a natural and sustainable way. Hand-picking is still very important. Every year, a team of around 30 people harvest the grapes by hand in most of Anselmann's vineyards. The fully ripe grapes are treated gently and with the help of the latest technology so that the typical varietal flavours are preserved. Ralf Anselmann, a qualified agricultural engineer, attaches great importance to the authenticity of his wines and sparkling wines. This is why bottling and sparkling are carried out entirely in-house. The result are high-quality wines of an international standard.

EUROVINO 2025: Planing is well underway

With the trade fair for wine, Messe Karlsruhe offers visitors from the retail, catering and hotel sectors an ideal platform to find out about (new) products and topics, exchange ideas and make purchases in a personal atmosphere.

At the premiere in March 2024, more than 300 curated, national and international exhibitors took the opportunity to network with trade visitors and present their high-quality range of wines and sparkling wines.

Like the debut event, EUROVINO 2025 will be sustainably conceived. Among other things, the focus will be on sustainable stand construction: reusable stand modules will ensure greater sustainability and keep the costs low for everyone involved.

The presentation options for wine producers and marketers consist of joint presentations and various complete stands. These include, for example, the complete stand ‘New Style’, a stand concept made of reclaimed wood that was developed for EUROVINO and was booked out early in 2024. In the context of all stand construction packages, exhibitors can benefit from bookable stand construction and marketing upgrades.

Exhibitors and visitors are in dialogue with each other at EUROVINO 2024.
On 9 and 10 March 2025, EUROVINO - trade fair for wine will once again offer exhibitors and visitors an ideal platform for mutual exchange.

Exhibitors as well as winegrowers and wine producers who are unable to have their own stand on site will have the opportunity to present their wines in the Wine Experience, EUROVINO's innovative tasting zone.

The wines presented at the Wine Experience and the products of exhibitors with their own stand on site are also available in the EUROVINO Weinguide: The digital platform depicts the broad product portfolio all year round, enables targeted searches and thus offers added value for exhibitors and visitors. Discover it at eurovino.info/weinguide!

Another major benefit is the customer invitation flatrate that enables a professional invitation management system. This allows exhibitors to invite unlimited customers and business partners (exclusively trade visitors) to the trade fair and their stand for free.

Further information on the various presentation options can be found at www.eurovino.info/en/exhibit. Please note: Potential exhibitors can secure an early bird discount until 31 July 2024!

Premiere of EUROVINO: Messe Karlsruhe draws a positive balance for the new trade fair for wine

"We are delighted that, after four years of development, we have been able to successfully establish a new concept for a wine trade fair on the market with our professional expertise and innovative strength. This is particularly convincing with its sustainable orientation, illustrated by new stand construction concepts, among other things, and the embedding of digital formats such as the EUROVINO Weinguide and the Digital Wine Exchange based on it," says Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe. EUROVINO is therefore an important component of the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Center's competence field of wine and perfectly complements the portfolio with the biennial Winzer-Service fair. Karlsruhe, located in the center of the four largest German wine-growing regions, offers the ideal setting for this.

Dr. Hermann Pilz, Chairman of the EUROVINO Advisory Board, has been involved in the conception of the new trade fair from the very beginning and emphasizes: "With the successful premiere event, we have succeeded in developing a platform from the industry for the industry, which offers a market-relevant range of exhibitors with a high level of attractiveness for trade visitors and plenty of space for high-quality exchange."

Cem Özdemir, Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, also took the opportunity to gain an impression of the new trade fair for wine on site. During talks and a tour of EUROVINO, he discussed relevant industry topics such as the cultivation of Piwi grape varieties and new methods for a healthy ecosystem in the vineyard with association representatives and exhibitors. In addition to these topics, dealcoholized wines and sparkling wines also played a role at EUROVINO, in the context of which Cem Özdemir emphasized in the run-up to his visit: "For me, a good glass of wine is also a part of quality of life. More and more people want to enjoy wine without alcohol from time to time and that is certainly not bad news. Anyone who wants to drink alcohol-free wine should also be able to do so in organic quality. However, dealcoholization is not yet permitted in the eco-regulation - you can't really explain that to anyone! We should change this quickly. I am therefore campaigning in Brussels and with colleagues in the member states for a modern and targeted adaptation of the eco-regulation. This step opens the door to an additional growing market, is in the interests of German viticulture and thus strengthens sustainable."

Exhibition stands and numerous visitors can be seen from above in the exhibition hall.
EUROVINO at Messe Karlsruhe celebrated a successful premiere on 3 and 4 March 2024.

Positive response from exhibitors and visitors

"I am highly satisfied with the premiere of EUROVINO - I will be happy to come back next year, as the visit was worthwhile for me," explains Christophe Meyer, Sommelier of the Year 2022 and 2023 Gault Millau, from Hotel Dollenberg in Bad Peterstal-Griesbach. This assessment is in line with many of the impressions of the well over 2,000 trade visitors who attended the premiere of EUROVINO in Karlsruhe, as well as those of the 305 exhibitors. These include David Klenert, owner of the Klenert winery in Kraichtal, who says with regard to his "new in-house exhibition on site": "Visitors celebrate the trade fair because they have enough time for discussions here. The feedback is all very positive, including about the connection and the location. We were able to deepen good contacts and exchange ideas with interested parties who will become new customers." Jost Hendrich from wine and delicatessen distributor Palorino from Bolzano summarized: "Sufficient space, plenty of daylight in the hall, good trade visitors, the location of Karlsruhe and the large catchment area - we are very satisfied." Vera Wiedemann, Sales Manager at Friedrich Kiefer KG/Ökologisches Weingut Schmidt from Kaiserstuhl, also draws a positive conclusion: "We had a lot of great conversations, without pressure, unhurried. The trade fair appeals to the right target group for us, because we reached not only regional customers, but customers from all over Germany. That suits us very well and we will definitely be back - EUROVINO is absolutely a trade fair with a promising future for us."

Trade visitor Dr. René Poss from Lager 15 Weinfachhandel from Karlsruhe confirms this positive assessment: "For me as a wine merchant, EUROVINO is a really great trade fair with short distances. It is a fantastic opportunity to visit my suppliers and sample new products. But I have also met interesting wholesalers and importers and I am very sure that we will be able to build lasting new business relationships here."

The satisfaction with the quality of the exhibitors is also evident in the results of the visitor survey: 98%, or almost every visitor, rated them with top marks at the premiere event. "It is also very pleasing that 92% of visitors to the trade fair would recommend EUROVINO to their colleagues, which confirms our concept with regard to the first event and spurs us on to develop EUROVINO further," emphasizes David Köhler, EUROVINO Project Manager.

Andreas Fritz from the Franz Fritz wine shop in Constance, who benefits from the large number of business partners on site, is also in a good mood: "I am enthusiastic about the personal atmosphere here, we have much more time to talk to our partners. I also find the overall atmosphere very positive and will definitely be back next year."

Well over 2,000 trade visitors took advantage of EUROVINO to interact with a total of 305 exhibitors and discover new wines.

Innovative program creates space for professional exchange and networking

With the Power Breakfast at the start of both days of the trade fair, the Networking Evening on the Sunday of the trade fair and the Expert Area, Messe Karlsruhe designed a deliberately accompanying and innovative program for EUROVINO that offered time and space for information, professional exchange and networking without distracting from the high-quality exhibitor portfolio. In the Expert Area, visitors were able to talk directly to recognized specialists on current topics for the retail and food service sectors at nine advice counters.

The networking evening on the Sunday of the trade fair also focused on exchange, with the highlight being the presentation of the Fair Wine Award, the international competition for sustainable and environmentally friendly wines, thus contributing to EUROVINO's overall concept of sustainability. A total of 18 wineries and wine producers from Germany, Austria and Italy were honored. The top award with 5 stars went to the Axel Bauer winery from Bühl/Baden with the 2022 Viognier 'Meisterstück'.

The award also included a competition in the retail and gastronomy sector for the first time: the "Wine Retailers of the Year" in various categories, the "Wine Bar of the Year", Freundschaft from Berlin, and the PFANDtastico 2024 Primitivo from Riegel Bioweine for the "Most Sustainable Packaging" were recognized.

The next EUROVINO will take place on March 9 and 10, 2025. Even before the end of the premiere event, numerous wineries have already confirmed their participation for the 2025 edition of EUROVINO.

People can be seen in exchange on a special area.
In the EUROVINO Expert Area, trade visitors from the retail, catering and hotel sectors were able to obtain new ideas and practical inspiration from experts at nine advice counters at any time.

Up-to-date information about the trade fair for wine can be found at any time at www.eurovino.info/en and on the social media channels LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook.

Just a few days until the premiere of EUROVINO: An overview of the new trade fair for wine in Karlsruhe

Around 300 exhibitors representing approximately 500 wineries from around 30 countries will be presented there. An accompanying program consisting of the Expert Area, the Power Breakfast, and the Networking Evening on the Sunday of the fair completes the portfolio of EUROVINO.

A variety of German and European (sparkling) wines as well as current industry trends will be presented to the professional audience

The portfolio of around 300 exhibiting wineries, cooperatives, associations, and importers showcases a diversity of high-quality and innovative wines and sparkling wines, primarily from Germany and Europe. The list of exhibitors can be found at any time at www.eurovino.info/aussteller. It also addresses current industry topics and trends, such as de-alcoholized products, wines from fungus-resistant grape varieties, new packaging solutions, and reusable systems.

"The EUROVINO represents a new, focused platform for the German and European market that clearly centers wine as a cultural asset, offering visitors a well-structured and high-quality range of exhibitors as well as time for professional exchange," summarizes Dr Hermann Pilz, Chairman of the EUROVINO Advisory Board.

The wine and sparkling wine offerings of EUROVINO are to be discovered in Hall 1 not only at the stands of the exhibitors but also in the tasting zone belonging to the Fair Wine Award (more on this below) and as part of the Digital Wine Exchange. The latter allows winemakers and wine producers to showcase their products at the trade fair without being present on-site, or to present them on another area in addition to the stand. This is based on the EUROVINO's digital wine database, the new EUROVINO Weinguide: A year-round platform that displays the products of the exhibitors and facilitates targeted searches.

Trade visitors to EUROVINO can discover the offerings of around 300 exhibitors representing some 500 wineries from around 30 countries.

Expert Area, Power Breakfast, Networking Evening: Space for information and networking

The program of EUROVINO, in addition to the focus of the new trade fair for wine – the presentation of the wine and sparkling wine offerings of the exhibitors – is deliberately kept concise and tailored to the needs and topics of the professional audience. In the entrance hall of Messe Karlsruhe, visitors can find targeted information on various topics for retail, gastronomy, and hotel industries at nine consulting counters in the Expert Area from industry experts. The range of content spans from new approaches in marketing to recruiting and training of employees, and to topics contributing to sustainability. David Köhler, project manager of EUROVINO, highlights:

"With the Expert Area, we consciously opt for an alternative to a classic lecture program: This way, visitors can flexibly gather the information and insights relevant to them at the counters and discuss topics and questions very individually with the respective specialists and experts."

Short presentations are given as part of the Power Breakfast at the start of both days of the fair, where the various topics of the Expert Area are introduced. The accompanying program of EUROVINO is completed by the Networking Evening on the fair Sunday, which includes welcoming speeches from the political sphere and the closing get-together with buffet and music, as well as the presentation of the aforementioned Fair Wine Award. As an international competition for sustainably and environmentally produced wines, it addresses the challenges faced by global viticulture in times of climate change and in the course of adapting to changed natural and social conditions. For the first time, the "Wine Merchants of the Year" will also be awarded in various categories.

Top trends at EUROVINO in Karlsruhe: From alcohol-free to Piwis and top national and international wines

This includes also numerous Piwi wines and non-alcoholic varieties. The accompanying EUROVINO programme features a Power Breakfast at the start of both days of the event, the Expert Area with nine advice counters, and the Networking Evening on the Sunday, which will also include the presentation of the Fair Wine Award.

Spotlight on national and international wines

Visitors can look forward to a companion programme relevant to their particular areas of interest. And with more than 265 participating exhibitors showcasing their products from more than 30 countries and 450 wineries, there will plenty to see and sample.

The spotlight will be on a variety of high-quality wines from Germany, other European countries and the rest of the world: Kierdorf Wein, for example, is represented with a selection of top French wines, as is La Francaise d'Exportation, which is showing high-quality châteaux from Bordeaux. Zeter –Die Weinagentur will also be in attendance with four top wineries from France (Languedoc, Roussillon), Spain (Campo de Borja) and Italy (Apulia), offering crémants, garnachas, cuvées and primitivos, among others. Höfferle, meanwhile, will be presenting first-class wines from Argentina, Chile and Mexico.

"EUROVINO focuses on the needs of the market. At the exhibitor stands, visitors will find top wines and specialties for restaurants, hotels and sommeliers, as well as best-sellers for the specialist wine trade and upmarket food retailers”, says Dr. Hermann Pilz, Chairman of the EUROVINO Advisory Board. "Many producers and retailers will also be bringing along new vintages."

This is true of the Neiss winery from the Palatinate, among others, which is presenting the new 2022 vintage of its high-quality Rieslings at EUROVINO, as well as the first wines from the 2023 vintage. Steinhauser from Kressbronn/Lake Constance, meanwhile, will be presenting the Edition Cuvée and Trio vom See from the 2023 vintage, alongside Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris matured in wooden barrels. With a nod to the new vintage, Weingut Klumpp from Bruchsal/Baden will also be presenting a 2023 Auxerrois and, as a further highlight, a 2021 Kirchberg Chardonnay.

Over 265 exhibitors will be presenting their national and international range of wines and sparkling wines at EUROVINO 2024.

Non-alcoholic wines and sparkling wines also showcased

According to the German Wine Institute (DWI), dealcoholized wines accounted for just one per cent in German wine consumption in 2022, but growth in sales was closer to 18 per cent – proof that this topic is becoming increasingly important. This can also be seen in the portfolio of exhibitors at EUROVINO: from wineries and cooperatives to importers – numerous exhibitors have dealcoholized wines and sparkling wines on offer newly.

These include Weingut Hensel (Palatinate), which is presenting its first in-house, non-alcoholic wine and sparkling wine at EUROVINO, and Weingut Julius Zotz (Baden), which has been offering dealcoholized variants since 2012. Alcohol-free Secco and wines have also become an important part of the product range at Winzergemeinschaft Franken, Bavaria's largest winegrowers' cooperative. Due to increasing customer demand, Wein & Secco Köth (Rheinhessen) is also expanding its own range in the segment, and will be presenting a new dealcoholized Chardonnay and an alcohol-free rosé refined with fruit extracts.

Alexander von Fischer, from wine wholesaler and importer Weinkontor Freund, says of the trend towards more alcohol-free wine consumption: "Demand for wines and spirits with little or no alcohol continues to grow and they therefore get a larger part of our range year by year. Drivers, pregnant women or those who choose to abstain for other reasons have resulted in producers developing innovative new products, heralding the start of an alcohol-free revolution."

Two men each smell on a glass of wine.
Trade visitors can also discover and sample numerous Piwi wines and non-alcoholic varieties at EUROVINO.

Mushroom-resistant grape varieties (Piwis) on growth

Figures show that, in addition to dealcoholized wines and sparkling wines, Piwi wines are also growing in popularity. The DWI estimates that in 2022, around three per cent of vineyards in Germany were growing these innovative varieties. According to the Piwi Deutschland association, the figure was 3.8 per cent in 2022, by 2028 it will be closer to 10 per cent in its estimation.

This segment will also be showcased at EUROVINO. Numerous exhibitors are keen to highlight their wines made from Piwi grape varieties, which are particularly resistant to powdery and downy mildew attacks, and therefore require hardly any plant protection. The joint stand of Ecovin, an association of organic wineries, represented at EUROVINO by eleven member companies from six growing regions, will focus on wines made from Piwi grape varieties. As part of the joint presentation by Naturgarten Kaiserstuhl, Bischoffinger Winzer will be presenting Piwis for the first time. Vier Jahreszeiten Winzer from Bad Dürkheim will be showcasing a Piwi Cuvée made from Muscaris and Sauvignon Gris, while Weingut 1616 Pfaffmann Heinz Stiftung from the Southern Wine Route will be presenting its new 2021 Cabernet Blanc.

An overview of the Piwi wines, as well as other alcoholic and non-alcoholic wines and sparkling wines exhibited at EUROVINO, can be found online at EUROVINO's digital wine database: weinguide.eurovino.info

New EUROVINO Weinguide offers added value for visitors and exhibitors

With the new EUROVINO Weinguide (weinguide.eurovino.info), the digital wine database of EUROVINO, interested parties can also view the offerings of the exhibitors online at any time. The year-round platform not only enables the targeted search for specific wines based on various criteria but also serves as the technical basis for the Digital Wine Exchange (DWE): A new format that allows winemakers and wine producers to present their products at the fair without being on-site. Participants of the DWE enter their booked wines in the EUROVINO Weinguide and send them to Messe Karlsruhe, so they can be shown on-site in a separate area. These and other presentation and booking options for potential exhibitors such as complete stands and joint presentations can be found at www.eurovino.info/ausstellen.

EUROVINO 2024: Press talk provides insights into the new trade fair for wine and puts sustainability centre stage

As a new trade fair for wine, it is aimed at wine producers, marketers and buyers with a focus on the German-speaking and European sales markets. EUROVINO offers the industry a relevant overview of the market and its innovations as well as a platform for personal, mutual exchange.

EUROVINO is intended to serve exhibitors and visitors as a platform for direct, mutual exchange and thus offer time and space for personal dialogue.

Information, networking, new presentation opportunities: What visitors and exhibitors can expect at EUROVINO

Trade visitors from the retail, gastronomy and hotel sectors can look forward to a market-relevant range of wines and sparkling wines from curated exhibitors in Hall 1 at EUROVINO, as well as an informative, accompanying programme in the entrance hall at Messe Karlsruhe. There are currently 185 exhibitors confirmed for EUROVINO, representing over 300 wineries. The programme will include an Expert Area with eight advice counters, where visitors can obtain information on topics relevant to the retail, catering and hotel industries. This will be complemented by the Power Breakfast, during which there will be short keynote speeches on the topics addressed in the Expert Area, starting at 9am on both days of the fair. There will also be a networking evening starting at 6pm on the Sunday.

For exhibitors, EUROVINO is an opportunity to showcase product ranges in a setting that focuses on the topic of wine and promises a fair price-performance ratio through sustainable and reusable stand construction concepts and new presentation formats. Options include complete or shared stands and the Digital Wine Exchange (DWE). Exhibitors can not only save money but also support sustainability goals with complete stands, almost all of the components of which can be reused. This also applies to the "New Style" complete stand, a stand construction concept made of reclaimed wood, that has been very well received by exhibitors and is now fully booked for EUROVINO 2024.

The Digital Wine Exchange is a new format that enables winegrowers and wine producers to exhibit their products at the trade fair without having to be on site themselves. The concept is based on a digital wine database, the new EUROVINO Weinguide: a year-round platform that lists exhibitor products and enables targeted searches. DWE exhibitors detail their booked wines in the guide and send them to Messe Karlsruhe in order for them to be showcased at EUROVINO.

Further information can be found at www.eurovino.info and on LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook.

The theme of the EUROVINO press talk was "Daring more sustainability in practice - what really counts".

EUROVINO and its exhibitors push the topic of sustainability

It is not only the stand construction that plays a role in the context of sustainability at EUROVINO: both the aforementioned programme and the networking evening with the presentation of the Fair Wine Award, an international competition for sustainable and in an environmentally friendly way produced wines, will map relevant topics. EUROVINO would also like to give selected sustainable exhibitors more visibility digitally and on site by upgrading their marketing services free of charge, for example through green stand numbering and specially marked entries in the EUROVINO Weinguide.

The topics of ecology and sustainability, from cultivation to production and distribution, will be mapped by the exhibitors in various forms.

At the press event, Dieter Hallerbach, Head of Logistics at exhibitor Peter Riegel Weinimport, outlined the importer's efforts in the logistics sector and motivated other companies: "Every company can start implementing sustainability goals at any time. Our aim is to communicate this and to be a practice example for our colleagues in the industry. We see climate-orientated economic activity in conjunction with a consumer lifestyle that includes wine appreciation as a guarantee for the future."

Dr. Keith Ulrich, Chairman of the Board of Fair and Green e.V. and also an exhibitor at EUROVINO 2024, examined the topic of sustainability in the context of winegrowing, and declared: "Sustainable, future-proof viticulture is more important than ever in today's world. That is why we are always in dialogue with winegrowers and scientists to discover future-proof solutions to current problems. After all, sustainability is inextricably linked with innovation: This means the reduction of CO2 emissions, for example, the use of lightweight glass bottles and the development and implementation of biodiversity measures that enhance agricultural land. It is also important to have partners in the upstream and downstream sectors who share the idea of sustainability."

The talk on December 4, 2023 with moderator Dr. Hermann Pilz, Chairman of the EUROVINO Advisory Board, David Köhler, Project manager of EUROVINO, Dieter Hallerbach, Dr. Keith Ulrich and Prof. Dr. Dominik Durner, from the Neustadt Wine Campus, can be viewed in full here.

Successful kick-off of EUROVINO – Trade Fair for Wine at the pre-event

The event, organised by the Messe Karlsruhe team and EUROVINO advisory board, featured a full programme and market-relevant exhibitor portfolio providing a taste of what will be on offer at EUROVINO, the exciting new trade fair that will premiere on March 3 and 4, 2024.

"Messe Karlsruhe, located in the centre of Germany's four largest wine-growing regions, has strategically positioned itself more broadly in the wine segment in recent months,” explains Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe. “In addition to RendezVino, a trade fair for the general public held for the first time in March 2023, and the Winzer-Service Messe, a trade and guest event taking place in 2025, we are looking forward to launching EUROVINO next year. "Helpful feedback from industry allowed us create a targeted pre-event that confirmed EUROVINO is on track to cover all the topics that will be highly relevant to those involved in the wine business."

Dr. Hermann Pilz, Chairman of the Advisory Board of EUROVINO, agrees. "EUROVINO focuses on groundbreaking topics such as wines of the future, nature and environmental protection, and the effects of climate change for the wine industry, thus creating a vision of the future for an innovative wine market," he says.

Future topics: supporting programme and exhibitor portfolio provide a foretaste of EUROVINO 2024

The fact that EUROVINO will focus on future-oriented concepts and topics was very much in evidence at the pre-event supporting programme: ARD meteorologist Karsten Schwanke spoke about climate change as a challenge for society and the associated effects for the wine industry. A series of lectures with various scientists and practitioners, moderated by Dr Hermann Pilz, focused on the topic of "Piwi (fungus-resistant) and resistant grape varieties in development and marketing". EUROVINO advisory board member Claudia Stern, meanwhile, discussed the role of women in agriculture, as well as the wine scene as a whole with the "Macherfrauen" of the industry.

A further highlight was Peter Hauk, Minister for Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection in Baden-Württemberg, together with Dr. Hermann Pilz, presenting awards to the winners of the Fair Wine Award. He explained: "The awards recognise the achievements of winegrowers and encourage them to continue their efforts to produce excellent wines in an environmentally friendly manner, and using sustainable concepts. Here, the state of Baden-Württemberg is setting a good example and has been promoting the breeding and development of fungus-resistant grape varieties for decades. There is growing interest in such varieties in Europe and the rest of the world. These so-called Piwis are particularly suitable for steep slopes that can be difficult to cultivate, and for organic viticulture because they require significantly fewer plant protection measures. Therefore, the resistant grape varieties are also representative of environmental protection and sustainability in viticulture."

The sustainable and forward-looking wines participating in the Fair Wine Award were available to sample in a tasting zone at the pre-event. Also showcased was the "Digital Wine Exchange" – a groundbreaking format from Messe Karlsruhe that allows vintners and wine producers to present their products at the trade fair without being on-site themselves.

Parallel to the supporting programme, selected market-relevant exhibitors represented a diverse and trend-setting range of projects and topics: Innovative new producers such as Zukunftsweine, Piwi Kollektiv and Piwi International were represented, as well as forward-looking associations such as Ecovin. In addition, trade visitors were able to share information on current industry topics and offers with relevant importers such as Wein Wolf, Schlumberger, Les Grands Chais de France, Saffer Wein, Peter Riegel Weinimport and Kierdorf Wein. Exhibitors and visitors were enthusiastic about the pre-event and are now very much looking forward to the main event, EUROVINO, next year. Philipp Rottmann, from Piwi Kollektiv, attended the pre-event as an exhibitor. He said afterwards: "EUROVINO is very interesting for us because it brings together key players in viticulture under one roof. That gives us the opportunity to not only network, but also make important contacts and hold helpful discussions. The combination of representatives from associations, trade, politics and innovative winegrowing businesses is particularly interesting for us." Bernd Kost, from Weingärtner Stromberg-Zabergäu eG, attended the pre-event as a visitor and is now planning to exhibit in 2024: "The event gave us a good feel for the new trade fair format on site, and made me hugely optimistic for the future." Martin Steinhauser, from Steinhauser GmbH in Kressbronn on Lake Constance, agrees. "The pre-event offered a promising framework, particularly in terms of exhibitor portfolios,” he says. I intend to be on site at EUROVINO 2024 as an exhibitor, particularly as the location and connections at the Karlsruhe exhibition centre are ideal for such a trade fair format.”

In order to be able to discuss offerings and expectations for EUROVINO 2024, pre-event exhibitors and trade visitors made good use of the networking evening, which brought the event to a culinary close.

Messe Karlsruhe expands portfolio and strategically positions itself on the topic of wine

On 29 June 2022, Messe Karlsruhe invited numerous wine experts to discuss in depth the possibilities of a market accompaniment about wine. Under the expert leadership of the long-standing editor-in-chief of the leading wine magazine "Weinwirtschaft", Dr Hermann Pilz, the meeting advanced to the founding meeting of an advisory board for a new trade fair for wine. The newly founded advisory board unanimously decided to establish a trade fair format at the Karlsruhe location under the name EUROVINO, which is aimed decidedly at the professional world. Dr Hermann Pilz comments: "For some time now, it has been apparent that producers of high-quality and innovative wines from the German and European markets lack an independent, focused platform. The idea is to offer producers and marketers from Germany and neighbouring countries a well-structured range of high-quality wines. A supporting programme will provide visitors from the wine trade, food retail and gastronomy with valuable insights that will help them in their everyday work to design innovative and high-quality wine assortments and thus stimulate their sales."

Frank Thieme, divisional director of Messe Karlsruhe, adds: "The top-class advisory board encouraged us to take this step for the wine industry. We are very pleased to be able to offer the market a solid, carefully designed and affordable trade fair in the heart of Germany's largest wine-growing regions."

The importance of focusing on the market and its needs in the conception of the fair is underlined by David Köhler, EUROVINO project manager: "Only through intensive personal contact with wine producers and buyers can the wishes of the market be taken on board. We are in very close contact with the industry in order to incorporate everything that is really important for our exhibitors and visitors into the concept of EUROVINO." In addition to Dr Hermann Pilz, the advisory board members include e.g. Claudia Stern from "Wine & Glory", Michael Kugel from the association "Die Weinreferenten", Petra Neuber from the association of ecologically working wineries "ECOVIN", Martin Schmidt from "Friedrich Kiefer KG Privatkellerei und Weingut", Holger Willy from "Rolf Willy GmbH", Martin Kutscher from "Scheck-In Einkaufs-Center Achern GmbH", Felix Riegel from "Peter Riegel Weinimport GmbH" and Barbara Wanner from "Organize Communications GmbH". Advisory board members thus represent the most important target groups in the wine industry, both on the supplier and customer side, and stand for consulting, expertise and networking in the respective region.

Another specialist event on the subject of "wine" - the Winzer-Service-Messe - has been in the guest fair portfolio since 2015 and pays tribute to the great expertise of Messe Karlsruhe on this subject. The Winzer-Service-Messe is Germany's largest trade fair for viticulture and cellar management and will open its doors from 8 - 10 February 2023 for what is already its fifth edition. Around 500 exhibitors will present themselves to the trade public on more than 28,000 square metres.

In addition, RendezVino, organised by Messe Karlsruhe, has been offering wine lovers wine trends to taste, experience and take away at Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre in the spring for 30 years.
