Successful second edition of EUROVINO: Trade fair for wine establishes itself as an important sales platform

Trade visitors from the retail, gastronomy and hotel sectors as well as the 432 exhibitors used the trade fair to engage in discussions in a relaxed and busy atmosphere and to strengthen existing business relationships and establish new ones. EUROVINO offers an ideal sales platform for this at a time when the industry is facing numerous challenges such as declining sales and turnover in conjunction with changing consumer habits.

Innovative concept receives positive response

“If you are looking for the German sales market, EUROVINO is the right place for you as an exhibitor. The second edition of our trade fair for wine has already impressively demonstrated that our concept has been accepted by the industry,” says Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe, adding: ”We are delighted that with EUROVINO 2025 we have not only been able to increase the number of exhibitors, but also the number of visitors to the same extent. This also applies to the reach of the trade fair. Numerous producers and importers have already booked their stand area for the upcoming EUROVINO.”

Les Grands Chais de France is one of the companies that are already planning their third participation at EUROVINO in 2026. Sandra Gless, Sales Manager, comments on the increased reach: “We welcomed visitors from all over Germany to our stand this year and were able to talk to customers from Munich, Hamburg, Bremen and Berlin, for example. In terms of the number of visitors to our stand, we are also benefiting from our additional image via the Wine Experience: visitors taste the wines there and then come to our stand, which I think is really great.”

The Wine Experience as an innovative tasting zone was expanded at the second edition of EUROVINO and supplemented by the alcohol-free segment. With over 130 wines from around 60 exhibitors, the Wine Experience – Alcohol-Free has an outstanding range of products on offer, which was very well received by visitors, as Sarah Rosie Neumann from Neumann's Wein + Musik in Wetzlar confirms: “Alcohol-free wine is a trend topic that we have noticed at many stands and that you have to try, which is why we think the Wine Experience – Alcohol-Free offer is great.” This also applies to Weingut Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Müller-Burggraef, which is represented as an exhibitor at the Wine Experience – Alcohol-Free. Maximilian F. W. Ferger, Estate Manager, states: “Alcohol-free is still one of the most sought-after categories. We have been playing on this theme for three years in the still wine segment and have now started with a sparkling variant - the theme is not only going through the roof within Germany, but also in exports.”

The non-alcoholic wines and sparkling wines can also be found in the EUROVINO Weinguide, the digital wine database, which currently contains around 3,000 wines and provides EUROVINO exhibitors with permanent visibility all year round and is a comprehensive source of information for their customers.

The relevance of EUROVINO is also evident in light of the current industry situation

“The Wine Experience and the EUROVINO Weinguide are examples of how, with EUROVINO as a whole and our associated formats and services, we offer the industry a tailor-made marketing and sales platform that helps to place the right topics and products, establish new contacts and strengthen existing ones in these challenging times,” emphasizes David Köhler, Project Manager of EUROVINO.

Markus Klumpp, Managing Director of Weingut Klumpp, also accentuates the relevance of a trade fair presence, especially in view of the current challenges: “A lot is happening in the wine sector at the moment. In view of the current mood and the economic situation of many industry players, it is important to be active and present at EUROVINO.”

The current challenges facing the wine industry and the associated relevance of trade fairs for industry-specific exchange were also key topics during the return visit to EUROVINO by patron Cem Özdemir, Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture. During a top-level discussion initiated by Messe Karlsruhe and the subsequent tour of the trade fair, he exchanged views with association representatives and exhibitors and summarized: “Viticulture in Germany is an important economic factor. It creates identity and shapes the landscape of many regions in an incomparable way. However, rising costs, changing consumer habits and the consequences of the climate crisis are putting Germany's winegrowers under pressure. We support them in meeting these challenges. For example, we are promoting investment in modern machinery and equipment with the Future Plant Protection Program, our Julius Kühn Institute is at the forefront of research into fungus-resistant grape varieties, and we have campaigned vigorously with the EU for the approval of potassium phosphonate in organic viticulture. Intensive exchange within the industry and with politicians is also important. EUROVINO is an excellent place for this.”

Federal Minister Cem Özdemir is talking to an exhibitor at a stand and tasting a wine.

“The visit by Federal Minister Özdemir once again underlines the relevance of our still young trade fair for wine, which fits perfectly into the portfolio of Messe Karlsruhe and complements our competence field of wine alongside the biannual Winzer-Service trade fair. The Karlsruhe trade fair location, situated in the middle of the four largest German wine-growing regions, also offers an ideal setting for EUROVINO as a platform for everything to do with wine,” summarizes René Naumann, Division Manager at Messe Karlsruhe and in this function also responsible for EUROVINO.

The market is looking forward to the next edition of EUROVINO, with around 93 percent of visitors intending to recommend the trade fair for wine to others and visit it again next year. In 2026, EUROVINO will take place on March 1 and 2 at Messe Karlsruhe.

Award ceremonies at EUROVINO 2025: Happy faces at the Networking Evening

Numerous retailers, restaurateurs, winemakers and wine producers were delighted to receive an award on the stage at Messe Karlsruhe.

New & different celebrates its premiere at EUROVINO 2025

The concept of the EUROVINO Innovation & Marketing Award was developed by Messe Karlsruhe and aims to evaluate marketing “outside and around the bottle”: the five categories therefore range from the best product design and packaging, the best product presentation at the POS and the best marketing campaign to the innovation of the year in wine marketing. A special feature is that the judging is carried out by two committees: In addition to a jury of experts (Experts' choice), a jury of industry up-and-comers (Young choice), namely students from Heilbronn University's Wine Marketing and Management course, also carried out the assessment. In this way, the award also provides entrants with explicit feedback on how their products and campaigns are received by the younger generation.

The two jury sessions ultimately produced the following results – congratulations to all the award-winning companies and projects!

  • Category Best product design:

- Young Choice: Firma Schönski GmbH & Weingut Achenbach – Logo, Corporate Design & Etiketten für das Weingut Achenbach

Fair Wine Award gives a stage to sustainable and environmentally friendly wines

With the motto “Fair has a future”, the Fair Wine Award addresses the challenges facing global viticulture in the wake of climate change and adapting to changing natural and social challenges.

This year's spring competition further establishes the Fair Wine Award as a respected testing authority for wines from sustainable wine production, organic wines, wines from resistant and historical grape varieties as well as corresponding sparkling wines and sparkling wines from traditional bottle fermentation through to experimental wines and natural or orange wines.

During EUROVINO, the award-winning wines of the Fair Wine Awards can be tasted on site in the corresponding tasting zone. The winners in the various categories were also presented with their certificates at the awards ceremony during the EUROVINO Networking Evening.

All award-winning wines and the corresponding wineries can be found here:

As part of the networking evening, the initiators of the Fair Wine Awards also selected the wine merchants of the year in four categories as well as the wine bar of the year. The following retailers and restaurateurs were delighted to receive an award:

Important impetus for the wine industry: Second edition of EUROVINO - Trade Fair for Wine is due to take place

In addition to innovations and highlights from the wine and sparkling wine sector, visitors can look forward to an accompanying program consisting of a Power Breakfast, Expert Area and Networking Evening, including the presentation of the Fair Wine Award and ‘New & different’, the new EUROVINO Innovation & Marketing Award. Tickets are available at eurovino.info/tickets and at the box offices on site – identification as a trade visitor is required.

EUROVINO as a source of new impetus and solutions

The industry is currently being confronted with declining sales and turnover in connection with changing purchasing and consumption behavior on the part of end consumers: According to a recent report by the German Wine Institute (DWI) based on the commissioned analysis of the wine market by NielsenIQ, the volume of wine purchased in Germany fell by four per cent last year and the turnover achieved with it by five per cent, with wines from Germany being slightly more affected than imported wines from abroad (down five per cent in sales and six per cent in turnover). According to the report, DWI Managing Director Monika Reule cites demographic change and the more cost-conscious purchasing behavior of Germans as the main reasons for this, in addition to changing consumer habits.

“Especially in these challenging times, it is essential for the various industry players to gain new business impetus and find individual solutions,” emphasizes David Köhler, Project Manager of EUROVINO, and adds: “EUROVINO offers the perfect setting for this: Exhibitors as well as visitors can discuss current topics and products in a relaxed atmosphere and establish new business relationships or strengthen existing ones.”

Over 400 exhibitors, representing more than 700 wineries from around 30 countries, will use EUROVINO this year as a platform to present their range of wines and sparkling wines to the German-speaking and European market, reflecting relevant industry topics and trends: These include non-alcoholic or reduced-alcohol wines and sparkling wines, which many exhibitors have added or expanded to their portfolios (more information here), as well as wines made from fungus-resistant grape varieties (Piwis), which contribute to the overarching theme of climate change and its consequences for viticulture and represent a possible response to it.

The trend towards alternative packaging solutions and reusable systems is also reflected in the exhibitors' offerings at EUROVINO - for example in the form of customized bag-in-box solutions or the presentation of a 1-litre or 0.75-litre reusable range.

Visitors and exhibitors have a lively conversation with each other.
On March 9 and 10, EUROVINO - Trade Fair for Wine will be the meeting place for the wine industry.

The EUROVINO program and tasting zones will also focus on relevant industry topics and trends

The accompanying program of the trade fair for wine includes the Expert Area format specially developed by EUROVINO in the Entrance Hall at Messe Karlsruhe. Experts will be available at eight counters throughout the day to provide individual advice on various industry topics, focusing on the topic of sustainability and addressing the aspect of alternative packaging, for example.

Sustainability also plays a role in the Fair Wine Award, which focuses on sustainably and environmentally friendly wines made from resistant and historical grape varieties, again taking up the theme of Piwi. The Fair Wine Award will be represented at EUROVINO with its own tasting area, and the award ceremony will also take place as part of the EUROVINO Networking Evening on Sunday evening at 6 pm. Also part of the Networking Evening is this year's award ceremony for the winners of “New & different”, the new EUROVINO Innovation & Marketing Award. In contrast to the Fair Wine Award, this award does not focus on the “contents of the bottle”, but on everything “outside and around the bottle”. The special feature here is that the judging is carried out by two committees: In addition to a jury of experts, there is also a jury of students, i.e. industry up-and-comers. This means that the award also provides entrants with explicit feedback on how their products and campaigns are received by the younger generation.

The EUROVINO program is rounded off by a Power Breakfast at the start of both days of the trade fair from 9 am – visitors and exhibitors can get in the mood for the day with a small breakfast buffet (free of charge), exchange ideas and listen to the keynote speech by motivational speaker Fabian Seewald on the stage in the Entrance Hall. The complete program overview can be found at eurovino.info/program.

The accompanying EUROVINO program includes a Power Breakfast, Expert Area and Networking Evening in the Entrance Hall at Messe Karlsruhe.

In addition to the Fair Wine Awards area, the portfolio of tasting zones at EUROVINO consists of the Wine Experience and the Wine Experience – alcohol-free. The Wine Experience format, like the above-mentioned program formats, combines the distinctive service concept and the innovative capacity of Messe Karlsruhe: It offers exhibitors an additional placement option on site and wine producers and marketers who are not personally present at EUROVINO an opportunity to exhibit their wines on site. In 2025, this will be expanded to include the Wine Experience – Alcohol-free, which was developed in cooperation with Zenotheque from Karlsruhe, a specialist in the alcohol-free sector. EUROVINO is thus giving the current industry topic even more visibility on site and addressing the corresponding needs of the market.

Enjoyment without alcohol: EUROVINO 2025 picks up on the industry theme of ‘alcohol-free’

This development will also be reflected at EUROVINO - Trade Fair for Wine, which will take place on 9 and 10 March 2025 at Messe Karlsruhe and will also be dedicated to non-alcoholic wines and sparkling wines via the exhibitors' product portfolio and especially in the new tasting zone, the Wine Experience – Alcohol-free.

Many people use the start of the year as part of Dry January or Lent as an opportunity to completely abstain from alcohol for a certain period of time. In addition, the mindful drinking trend, which is not about abstaining per se, but rather about more conscious consumption, is moving into focus. As a result, there is growing interest in high-quality and flavorful alternatives that allow enjoyment without alcohol.

The figures reflect this development: according to the latest survey by the German Wine Institute (DWI), the number of buyers of non-alcoholic wines in the retail sector increased by 30 per cent in 2023 compared to the previous year, resulting in a 27 per cent increase in sales. The turnover increased by 54 per cent. ‘Their market share of total wine purchases is still at a low level of around one per cent. Non-alcoholic sparkling wines are already more strongly represented in the sparkling wine market with a 7.4 per cent share,’ explains Ernst Büscher, DWI press spokesman, adding with foresight: ’The non-alcoholic wine & sparkling wine segment will certainly continue to grow in importance over the next few years because it can be used to reach new target groups. This also includes young adults, who will have consumed fewer alcoholic beverages in 2023 than ever before. Wine quality will certainly continue to improve thanks to new technologies and process optimization. We see the gastronomy sector as a key to introducing more consumers to non-alcoholic wines, as they can be savored by the glass.’

Exhibitors at EUROVINO pick up on the trend towards non-alcoholic wines and sparkling wines

At this year's EUROVINO, trade visitors from the retail, catering and hotel sectors will also be able to try out non-alcoholic wines and sparkling wines. Numerous exhibitors have non-alcoholic products in their portfolios and will be presenting their innovations on site: For example, Weingut Langenwalter from the Palatinate will be presenting an alcohol-free Riesling for the first time, Weingut Oliver Zeter, also from the Palatinate, will be presenting a new dealcoholized Sauvignon Blanc, and Weingut Winkler (Palatinate), which is focusing on wines made from Piwi grape varieties at EUROVINO, will be presenting a dealcoholized Piwi wine made from Cabernet Blanc for the first time. The württembergische Sekt- und Weinmanufaktur Stengel Württemberg sparkling wine and wine manufacturer Stengel, on the other hand, will be presenting a new alcohol-free sparkling wine variant. Both alcohol-free sparkling wines and wines can be found at Genossenschaftskellerei Heilbronn (Württemberg), among others, which is expanding its existing alcohol-free program with two new alcohol-free wines, a Zero Sauvignon Blanc and a Zero Cabernet Cubin. Or at SM Sekt Manufaktur (Nahe), which has an alcohol-free sparkling wine line in its portfolio and is presenting its first dealcoholized white wine at EUROVINO. With its alcohol-free products, SM Sekt Manufaktur wants to offer consumers an option for conscious enjoyment, as Managing Director Kai Maschtschenko emphasizes: ‘Mindful drinking and the demand for alcohol-free products influence each other. More and more people are consciously reducing their alcohol consumption, which is increasing interest in high-quality alternatives. Dealcoholized drinks are no longer just a substitute, but a conscious choice for enjoyable conscious choice for enjoyable moments. This trend has accelerated in the last two years in particular.’

Wine and champagne bottles in different colours stand next to each other.
The portfolio of exhibitors at EUROVINO on 9 and 10 March 2025 includes numerous (new) non-alcoholic wines and sparkling wines.

The international range at EUROVINO also includes alcohol-free wines and sparkling wines: Wein Wolf, for example, will be showcasing alcohol-free products from Spain, Italy and France, among others, and Riegel Bioweine, which has alcohol-free sparkling wine, white wine, red wine and mulled wine in its range, will be presenting a new alcohol-free Chardonnay from France. Stephan Pellegrini, on the other hand, will be presenting a new non-alcoholic sparkling wine from Italy at EUROVINO. When asked about the current development of alcohol-free wines in Europe, Ana Margareto, Marketing & Purchasing Spain/France at Stephan Pellegrini, summarizes: ‘Germany leads Europe in terms of demand and acceptance of alcohol-free wines. Although countries such as Italy, France and Spain are still reluctant to consume alcohol-free wines domestically, they are positioning themselves as export-orientated producers and are catching up with innovative products. We are very satisfied with the non-alcoholic wine-based products from Luigi Sgarzi and the new non-alcoholic sparkling wine from Villa Sandi, as they meet the needs of our customers perfectly and have received positive feedback.’

Wine Experience is also being expanded to include alcohol-free

In addition to the opportunity to get to know numerous non-alcoholic wines and sparkling wines at the exhibitors' stands, visitors to EUROVINO 2025 will now also have the chance to do so at the Wine Experience – Alcohol-free, one of the tasting zones at EUROVINO. EUROVINO is thus picking up on the current industry theme and the associated needs of the market and giving it even more visibility on site. The Wine Experience - Alcohol-free has been developed in cooperation with Zenotheque from Karlsruhe, a specialist in the alcohol-free sector. Zenotheque will also have a stand at EUROVINO, where it will be presenting a specialty, including a dealcoholized ice wine from the Löffler/Breisgau winery.

The Wine Experience - Alcohol-free has a total of 130 wines and sparkling wines from 58 exhibitors. These can already be discovered in the run-up to the trade fair for wine and beyond in the EUROVINO Wine Guide, EUROVINO's digital wine database. At eurovino.info/weinguide you can search specifically for alcohol-free products. After registration, it is also possible to save selected wines in a watch list and add your own notes.

Sustainability is presented in many different ways at EUROVINO 2025

The second edition of EUROVINO – Trade Fair for Wine, organised by Messe Karlsruhe, is scheduled for 9 and 10 March 2025. Over 400 wine producers and marketers are looking forward to presenting new products and highlights from their own range of wines and sparkling wines to visitors from the retail, catering and hotel sectors. In addition to other topics, the aspect of sustainability also plays a relevant role.

The exhibitors' endeavours can be seen in a variety of ways

From cultivation to production and logistics: the list of possibilities and measures with which the exhibitors at EUROVINO endeavour to contribute to greater sustainability in practice is long. These include avoiding the use of herbicides, insecticides or glyphosate, the cultivation of Piwi grape varieties (fungus-resistant grape varieties) and the greening of vineyards to promote species diversity and biodiversity. On the other hand, the commissioning of photovoltaic systems to generate their own electricity, the switch to recyclable packaging solutions, lightweight glass bottles or reusable systems, to name just a few examples.

Axel Neiss, owner of Weingut Neiss from Kindenheim/Pfalz and exhibitor at EUROVINO, is also concerned with the topic of sustainability in his own business and beyond and states with regard to the industry: “The topic of sustainability has received increased attention in recent years. Over the past 15 years, many wineries have focussed on organic, but now the topic of sustainability is taking centre stage. Wineries must address related issues in order to achieve climate targets. For me personally, the realisation has grown, also from seminars: ‘Anyone without a sustainability strategy will disappear from the market’.”

Georg Forster, Federal Chairman of ECOVIN, also represented at EUROVINO, emphasises the importance of sustainable action as a whole in this context: “It was already our goal over 40 years ago to make viticulture ecological and sustainable - long before the term ‘sustainability’ was discovered in the industry. Sustainability is nothing new but should be a matter of course that drives people to preserve nature for future generations.”

EUROVINO offers an ideal platform for engaging in dialogue on this topic with exhibitors on site - also against the background of organic and sustainability certifications and memberships. EUROVINO gives exhibitors with such certifications the opportunity to achieve greater visibility for them both digitally and on site: Be it by displaying their certifications or memberships in the EUROVINO Weinguide, adding them to the list of exhibitors or providing additional signage at their stand.

Exhibitors and visitors can be seen talking to each other at the stand.
Numerous exhibitors at EUROVINO present the topic of sustainability and are happy to engage in dialogue on site.

EUROVINO - sustainability always in focus

In addition to reflecting the topic of sustainability in the exhibitors' portfolios, the conceptualisation and further development of EUROVINO as a trade fair format also took the opportunity to increasingly incorporate sustainable aspects: On the one hand, this can be seen in the range of exhibition stands - complete packages are increasingly being offered, in which almost all components are reusable. As in the previous year, the New Style complete stand, a stand concept made of reclaimed wood that was specially developed for EUROVINO, is particularly popular in the run-up to EUROVINO 2025. This was already fully booked in autumn 2024 and was therefore supplemented by another variant.

The theme of sustainability is also reflected in the EUROVINO programme: EUROVINO is the host of the Fair Wine Award, the international competition for sustainably and environmentally friendly produced wines from resistant and historic grape varieties. These can be discovered and tasted on site in the Fair Wine Award tasting zone. The awards will be presented during the EUROVINO Networking Evening on the Sunday of the fair. Entries can be submitted until 22 February 2025 and more information can be found at award.fair-wine.com.

Visitors explore the Fair Wine tasting zone, which is illustrated here with wine bottles and signage.
The Fair Wine Award, including the tasting zone, focuses on sustainable and environmentally friendly wines made from resistant and historic grape varieties.

The protagonists of the Expert Area, which is an essential part of the EUROVINO programme and enables individual consultations on various industry topics at eight counters, will also address this aspect: among other things, they will focus on the successful and sustainable training of employees, present sustainable packaging solutions or provide information on the possible uses of cork, a material that is 100 percent sustainable by nature. In addition, the sustainability check at another counter offers the opportunity to determine your own sustainability status and receive advice on a possible future strategy. You can find out more about all the topics in the Expert Area at eurovino.info/programme.

Further information on EUROVINO in the context of sustainability can be found at eurovino.info/sustainability. There, as well as at messe-karlsruhe.de/sustainability, detailed insights can also be gained into the endeavours of Messe Karlsruhe as a whole, which has been the first trade fair in Germany to be validated according to EMAS since October 2023.

First EUROVINO Day brings together industry expertise at Messe Karlsruhe and provides relevant impetus
View of the stage at EUROVINO Day from the audience.
Numerous wine producers, marketers, buyers and other industry players attended the first EUROVINO Day at Messe Karlsruhe on 10 January 2025.

The new talk and networking format, EUROVINO Day, was organised under the theme ‘The wine industry in transition: From tradition to the future. What remains? What's coming?’ provided exciting insights and impetus to help address current issues and challenges in practice and set the right course for the future. In two thematic blocks, high-ranking specialists from the industry shared their expertise and entered into discussion with each other.

The EUROVINO Day also provided a preview of EUROVINO on 9 and 10 March 2025 – more information here – and offered the opportunity for personal exchange and networking.

The keynote speaker can be seen in action on stage.
Prof Dr Dieter Hoffmann, emeritus professor at Hochschule Geisenheim University, gave the keynote speech on the topic of ‘Germany as reflected in the global wine market. A look at the current wine market situation and outlook for the future.’

‘There are winners even in declining markets and market segments’

The first theme block focussed on the positioning of the German wine industry in a national and international context with questions about the positioning of wine in the various markets and in social perception.

Prof Dr Dieter Hoffmann, emeritus professor at Hochschule Geisenheim University, kicked off the event with his keynote speech entitled ‘Germany as reflected in the global wine market. A look at the current wine market situation and outlook for the future.’ He outlined that the current situation on the wine market is characterised by a steady and currently particularly strong decline in wine consumption, behind which long-term structural causes due to changes in the population structure and short-term economic causes can be identified. One of the consequences he drew from this was: ‘In addition to the most well-organised decline in wine production, it is therefore important to focus on gaining market share in known or newly conquered market segments. [...] Because even in declining markets or market segments, there are winners. The market is always on the move - e.g. through new brands, design in appearance and flavour, grape varieties and winemaker stories. Knowing the preferences of target customers is the key to success.’

The participants in the panel discussion following the keynote speech, moderated by Dr Hermann Pilz, Chairman of the EUROVINO Advisory Board, discussed the key question ‘Setting the course for the wine industry yesterday and today. What has proved successful, what has proved problematic and what can we learn from this for the future?’. On the one hand, they discussed how wine as a cultural asset perceives its position in society, and on the other hand, one of the focal points was the question of how the legal framework for the production and labelling of German wines affects marketing opportunities. Is the current law and the changes planned for the future suitable for giving German wines a higher profile? Are the legal framework conditions able to guarantee the product differentiation demanded on the market? The panel made it clear that the wine law regulations should give individual entrepreneurs more freedom. Further insights into the discussion round can be found in the full-length video on topic block I, including the outlook for EUROVINO 2025 with Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe, and David Köhler, Project Manager of EUROVINO. This can be found here at any time.

The keynote speaker during her presentation on stage.
Dr Larissa Strub, Institute for Wine and Beverage Management at Hochschule Geisenheim University, presented the latest results on success-oriented corporate management from the Geisenheim company analysis.

‘The wine industry is at a turning point’

The second theme block focussed on the current situation and the opportunities available to wine producers and wine marketers, but also to retailers in the various sales channels and markets.

To this end, Dr Larissa Strub, Institute for Wine and Beverage Management at Hochschule Geisenheim University, presented the latest findings on success-oriented corporate management from the Geisenheim company analysis in her keynote speech, together with the question ‘Where do wineries, wine cellars and cooperatives stand?’ in this context. Summarising, she explained: ‘The wine industry is at a turning point: changing consumer habits and demographic trends are forcing the industry to adapt production volumes to falling demand. Rising costs and stagnating prices require consistent business management monitoring in companies in order to remain future-proof.’

The panel discussion that followed the keynote speech focussed on companies in the wine industry, represented by participants from wineries and cooperatives as well as retailers. Under the title ‘Focus on the future’, the discussion centred on the challenges facing companies in the wine industry on the one hand and on the development opportunities that are opening up for wineries, winegrowers' cooperatives, wineries and the trade on the other. Among other things, it became clear that one of the key challenges for all those involved in the wine industry is to establish closer links between producers and marketers in order to better address and reach end consumers. Following on from the ‘consistent business management monitoring’ already mentioned by Dr Strub, the panel also emphasised the aspects of cost controlling and profit-oriented thinking as decisive factors for a successful future. Topic block II can be viewed in full at any time here.

Kick-off to the EUROVINO year 2025: Countdown to the trade fair for wine on 9 and 10 March starts with EUROVINO Day

Then a curated selection of wine producers and marketers from Germany and other European countries will once again present themselves to visitors from the retail, gastronomy and hotel sectors at Messe Karlsruhe. The latter can already look forward to around 330 exhibitors and their high-quality portfolio of wine and sparkling wine products. This means that the figure is already above last year's final level of 305 exhibitors. An up-to-date overview can be found at any time at eurovino.info/exhibitors. In addition, this year three tasting zones, the Expert Area, the Networking Evening including award ceremonies on Sunday and the Power Breakfast at the start of both days of the fair will offer visitors and exhibitors added value.

Wine Experience is expanded to include alcohol-free

EUROVINO has three tasting zones for interested visitors this year: First, the Fair Wine Award tasting area, which, like the associated award, focuses on sustainable and environmentally friendly wines made from resistant and historic grape varieties. Second, the Wine Experience, a format that was already part of EUROVINO at its premiere in 2024 and will be presented in a larger format in its second year. The Wine Experience offers exhibitors another placement option and wine producers and marketers who are unable to attend EUROVINO in person an opportunity to exhibit their wines on site. This will now be supplemented by an additional tasting zone: with the Wine Experience – Alcohol-free, EUROVINO is addressing the needs of the market and a current industry topic and giving it even more visibility on site.

The Wine Experience will be expanded in 2025 to include a further area dedicated to alcohol-free products.
The Wine Experience will be expanded in 2025 to include a further area dedicated to alcohol-free products.

Expert Area offers advice services available at any time

In 2025, the Expert Area format developed by EUROVINO will be presented in the entrance hall of Messe Karlsruhe. The special feature here is that the experts will be available at eight counters throughout the day instead of being integrated into a timed lecture program. This means that visitors can obtain individual advice at any time on various current industry topics, including sustainability, profitability and employee training and development, without competing with the exhibitors’ visits to their stands in Hall 1. The overview of topics in the Expert Area can be found at eurovino.info/en/programme.

Networking Evening offers the new award “New & different”

In addition to the opportunity for exchange and networking as well as the presentation of the Fair Wine Award, the networking evening in the entrance hall at the end of the first day of the fair will for the first time include the presentation of the winners of the new EUROVINO Innovation & Marketing Award “New & different”. In contrast to the Fair Wine Award, this award does not focus on the “contents of the bottle”, but on everything “outside and around the bottle”: the five categories therefore range from the best product design and the best product presentation at the POS to the innovation of the year in wine marketing. A special feature is that the judging is carried out by two committees: In addition to a jury of experts, there is also a jury of students, i.e. industry newcomers. In this way, the award also provides entrants with explicit feedback on how their products and campaigns are received by the younger generation. Further information on “New & different” can be found at eurovino.info/award.

The Power Breakfast at the start of both days of the trade fair is another opportunity to exchange ideas: Freshly fortified by a small breakfast buffet and a keynote speech by motivational speaker Fabian Seewald on the stage in the entrance hall, exhibitors and visitors can then start the day of the trade fair and devote themselves to current industry topics and issues as well as the new vintages and other innovations in the context of the various EUROVINO formats and at the exhibitors' stands.

The new EUROVINO Innovation & Marketing Award “New & different” will be presented for the first time as part of the Networking Evening.

EUROVINO as a source of inspiration and solutions

In this context, Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe, concludes with a view to the exhibitors and visitors of EUROVINO: “With EUROVINO, we offer the industry - from producers to retailers and restaurateurs – a framework for new business impulses, but above all for individual solutions. EUROVINO sees itself as a reliable partner and a tailor-made sale and purchasing platform – especially in challenging times with changing consumer behaviour, rising costs and changing climatic conditions.

Also, the new EUROVINO Day format, which will be focusing on “The wine industry in transition: from tradition to the future. What remains? What's coming?” is dedicated to current issues, challenges and trains of thought.

Three months to go until EUROVINO in Karlsruhe: The number of exhibitors is already above last year's level!

Around 310 high-quality wine producers and marketers from Germany and other European countries have already registered, which means that the number of exhibitors from the premiere year 2024 has already been exceeded. All EUROVINO exhibitors that have already been confirmed can be viewed at eurovino.info/exhibitors. If you would also like to exhibit at the event, you can find all the information at eurovino.info/exhibit.

"We are delighted that EUROVINO, now in its second year, has been so well received by the industry and offers many suppliers of wine and sparkling wine products suitable access to the market,” explains David Köhler, EUROVINO project manager.

The hall is full of exhibitors and visitors at EUROVINO.
Around 310 wine producers and marketers have already been confirmed for EUROVINO on 9 & 10 March 2025.

This access to the market is not only represented on site by a presence with an own stand or as part of a joint presentation, but also in the context of the Wine Experience. The tasting zone offers exhibitors with a stand on site a further placement option, as well as wine producers and marketers who are not at EUROVINO in person or with a stand an opportunity to exhibit their wines on site. The Wine Experience will also have another area dedicated to alcohol-free wines. This tasting zone is new in 2025 and gives this important industry topic even more visibility at EUROVINO.

Expert Area, Networking Evening, Power Breakfast: the program for 2025 is ready

In addition to the exhibitors' comprehensive offering of wines and sparkling wines, EUROVINO will once again offer an accompanying program - tailored to the needs of visitors from the retail, catering and hotel sectors as well as those of the exhibitors.

An essential part of this is the Expert Area in the entrance hall of Messe Karlsruhe: During the opening hours of EUROVINO, experts will provide advice at eight counters on various topics from the retail and gastronomy sectors, such as Focus on costs - How we can improve the profitability of our businesses or More sales with wine - Convincing quality meets good arguments. With various tools and quizzes, there will also be more opportunities for visitors to interact this year. The overview of the Expert Area topics can be found at any time at eurovino.info/program.

The basic idea behind the Expert Area format is that interested parties can interact with the experts at any time and are therefore not tied to a lecture program that may compete with the visit of the exhibiting wine producers and marketers in Hall 1. This shows that the program is deliberately kept to a minimum - the stage belongs to the exhibitors.

The Expert Area in the entrance hall at Messe Karlsruhe will once again be an integral part of the EUROVINO program in 2025.

There will also be a Power Breakfast at the start of both days of the fair and a Networking Evening at the end of the first EUROVINO day. In addition to the presentation of the Fair Wine Award and the new EUROVINO Innovation & Marketing Award “New & different”, this will provide an opportunity for exchange and networking. All information on participating in the Fair Wine Award is available at fair-wine.com.

New & different - EUROVINO Innovation & Marketing Award premieres in 2025

The aforementioned “New & different - EUROVINO Innovation & Marketing Award” complements the range of awards at EUROVINO for the first time and gives new ideas and innovations more visibility: in combination with the Fair Wine Award, which focuses on the contents of the bottle, “New & different” focuses on marketing outside and around the bottle. The five categories include best product design, packaging, presentation at the POS, marketing campaign and innovation of the year in wine marketing.

The evaluation is carried out by a jury of experts, who select a winner in each category with the addition “experts' choice”. In addition, all entries will also be judged by a jury of students from Heilbronn University's Wine Marketing and Management course. This “young choice” is intended to highlight the extent to which the entries appeal to the younger target group. Applications can be submitted until January 31, 2025, and all details can be found at eurovino.info/award.

ConVINOsation: EUROVINO - trade fair for wine launches new podcast format
The logo of the new EUROVINO Podcast.
With ConVINOsation, EUROVINO - trade Fair for Wine is launching its own podcast format.

With ConVINOsation, EUROVINO is giving current expert topics within the industry an additional platform and thus creating a link with topics that also play a role in formats and discussions on site.

In the first season, host and industry expert Peter Douglas DipWSET talks to specialists about topics such as non-alcoholic wine - trends, technologies & market potential, the role of AI in the wine industry and the new EU guidelines on nutrition and content labelling for wine sales. These first three episodes - out of a total of ten - can already be heard at eurovino.info/podcast.

ConVINOsation thus provides wine producers, marketers and buyers with tips, ideas and impulses for daily practice and thus offers exhibitors and visitors to EUROVINO added value that is available at any time in the run-up to the trade fair - from the industry for the industry!

Interested in an audio sample? Start now with the first three episodes!

In the first ConVINOsation episode, the focus is on alcohol-free wine: host Peter Douglas and guest Frédéric Chouquet-Stringer from Zenotheque talk about the growth of the alcohol-free wine sector, show what needs to be done differently in the vineyard in order to produce alcohol-free wine and discuss the various technologies for dealcoholisation. They also take a look at cost and legal aspects as well as the years ahead, with Chouquet-Stringer emphasising the following with regard to alcohol-free wine: ‘It's not a magic potion, it won't completely revolutionise a winemaker's business from one day to the next, but it is a very important building block for the future.’

Episode two focuses on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI), which is currently the subject of much discussion and is also leading to changes in the wine industry. Peter Douglas and expert Dominik Durner, Professor of Food Technology and Oenology at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences / Neustadt Wine Campus, discuss the instruments behind the term AI and what impact developments in this area will have on the wine industry in the future. Durner also emphasises the importance of dealing with this topic at an early stage: ‘Today, at a good school, a winemaker must also learn how to deal with social media, websites, AI, large language models, etc. These are the topics of the future. If I don't master this today, I won't be able to sell wine tomorrow. That's the key.’

This ConVINOsation episode therefore offers a suitable opportunity for anyone who wants to get into the topic of AI in the wine industry outside of timetables or study programmes.

In the third episode, which was published yesterday, Douglas and his guest, lawyer Dr Hans Eichele, a specialist in wine and food law, discuss the new EU guidelines on nutrition and content information for wine sales. These have been in place since the end of 2023 and include the display of QR codes on bottle labels, including the provision of various information. However, they still raise questions for some industry players, which will be clarified in this episode. Eichele categorises them in this context: ‘It is true that it is now an additional burden for the industry. But the fact that we've managed to do this with the QR code makes some things easier. It's much easier to correct mistakes, you're more flexible and there's more space on the label than if you were to write everything on it. In this respect, the industry has got off lightly with the QR code.’

*****

Ten episodes are planned for the first season of ConVINOsation, which is only available in German, up to the days of the event on 9 and 10 March 2025. These will be released every two weeks on the usual streaming platforms and can be found directly at eurovino.info/podcast and on Podigee.

The latter offers visitors individual advice from experts on various industry topics, who provide relevant ideas, tips and innovative solutions for day-to-day practice. This format is deliberately designed so that interested parties can talk to the professionals at any time during EUROVINO's opening hours and are therefore not tied to a lecture program that may compete with a visit to the exhibiting wine producers and marketers.

Özdemir and Hauk assume patronage of EUROVINO 2025

Cem Özdemir, Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, and Peter Hauk, Minister of Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection Baden-Württemberg, who have both taken on the patronage of EUROVINO 2025, also emphasize the importance of a platform such as EUROVINO in the context of current challenges and the associated impetus and solutions:

“Wines from Europe are top-quality products with centuries of tradition and culture. Every drop tells its own story. It tells of unique landscapes and people, soils and climate. EUROVINO offers the wine industry an excellent platform in challenging times. For the wine industry, this means an opportunity to establish itself on the market, intensify contacts with the trade and catering trade and open up new sales channels. Trade fairs and exhibitions such as EUROVINO 2025 in Karlsruhe offer the best conditions for this - even beyond national borders. After the successful premiere of EUROVINO 2024, I wish the organisers every success for the new edition in 2025 “, explains Cem Özdemir.

And Peter Hauk points out: “Viticulture in the country is changing. The climate and consumer habits are changing. The creativity and expertise of winegrowers is needed now more than ever to prepare the industry for the future. A trade fair such as EUROVINO is a suitable platform for networking all players in the value chain: Producers, marketers and buyers of wine from the region. It is about new ideas for outstanding wines that can be produced and sold in the region in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way. Above all, we should have the courage to accompany this change positively together. The reward for this commitment is the continuation of our unique and outstanding winegrowing culture.“

Palatinate winery Anselmann delivers for the tenth time as exclusive wine supplier to the German House in Paris 2024

The Anselmann vineyard from Edesheim, exhibitor at EUROVINO, is the exclusive supplier to the German House in Paris. Since 2000, Anselmann has been supplying the German houses in the Olympic cities with wine.

Anselmann wine during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the German House

Thus, during the Olympics from 26 July and the Paralympics from 28 August, the German House will be the place to celebrate both the small and the big successes with Palatinate Riesling, Pinot Blanc or Muscatel. Among other things, the German House serves as a meeting place for German athletes. The team led by owner Ralf Anselmann will be supplying a total of six varieties to the German House, which is based during the Games in Paris in the Stade Jean Bouin, a rugby and football stadium. The Team Germany Fan Zone is also located on the pitch of the Stade Jean Bouin, which will be a meeting point for German and international fans for 17 days and which will offer a varied programme including medal celebrations, public viewing and a sports area. In this area, Anselmann is also represented with five types of wine, including a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Pinot Gris, and can thus present its portfolio to visitors from all over the world.

‘We are very proud of being part of the Games in Paris with our products in the German House and the Team Germany Fan Zone. This means that every wine lover can bring a piece of the Olympics into their glass at home - also visible on our labels, which feature the Team D-logo and which are available at the vineyard or from retailers,’ explains owner Ralf Anselmann.

In March 2024, Anselmann had already presented the wines for the German House 2024 at the EUROVINO. In 2025, he will be exhibiting again at the trade fair for wine in Karlsruhe.

About the vineyard Werner Anselmann

The Anselmann family winery in Edesheim in the southern Palatinate has a vineyard area of around 150 hectares and is now run by siblings Ralf and Ruth Anselmann. The family itself have been associated with viniculture for centuries.

The vineyards are cultivated by qualified personnel with a lot of manual labour in a natural and sustainable way. Hand-picking is still very important. Every year, a team of around 30 people harvest the grapes by hand in most of Anselmann's vineyards. The fully ripe grapes are treated gently and with the help of the latest technology so that the typical varietal flavours are preserved. Ralf Anselmann, a qualified agricultural engineer, attaches great importance to the authenticity of his wines and sparkling wines. This is why bottling and sparkling are carried out entirely in-house. The result are high-quality wines of an international standard.

EUROVINO 2025: Planing is well underway

With the trade fair for wine, Messe Karlsruhe offers visitors from the retail, catering and hotel sectors an ideal platform to find out about (new) products and topics, exchange ideas and make purchases in a personal atmosphere.

At the premiere in March 2024, more than 300 curated, national and international exhibitors took the opportunity to network with trade visitors and present their high-quality range of wines and sparkling wines.

Like the debut event, EUROVINO 2025 will be sustainably conceived. Among other things, the focus will be on sustainable stand construction: reusable stand modules will ensure greater sustainability and keep the costs low for everyone involved.

The presentation options for wine producers and marketers consist of joint presentations and various complete stands. These include, for example, the complete stand ‘New Style’, a stand concept made of reclaimed wood that was developed for EUROVINO and was booked out early in 2024. In the context of all stand construction packages, exhibitors can benefit from bookable stand construction and marketing upgrades.

Exhibitors and visitors are in dialogue with each other at EUROVINO 2024.
On 9 and 10 March 2025, EUROVINO - trade fair for wine will once again offer exhibitors and visitors an ideal platform for mutual exchange.

Exhibitors as well as winegrowers and wine producers who are unable to have their own stand on site will have the opportunity to present their wines in the Wine Experience, EUROVINO's innovative tasting zone.

The wines presented at the Wine Experience and the products of exhibitors with their own stand on site are also available in the EUROVINO Weinguide: The digital platform depicts the broad product portfolio all year round, enables targeted searches and thus offers added value for exhibitors and visitors. Discover it at eurovino.info/weinguide!

Another major benefit is the customer invitation flatrate that enables a professional invitation management system. This allows exhibitors to invite unlimited customers and business partners (exclusively trade visitors) to the trade fair and their stand for free.

Further information on the various presentation options can be found at www.eurovino.info/en/exhibit. Please note: Potential exhibitors can secure an early bird discount until 31 July 2024!

Premiere of EUROVINO: Messe Karlsruhe draws a positive balance for the new trade fair for wine

"We are delighted that, after four years of development, we have been able to successfully establish a new concept for a wine trade fair on the market with our professional expertise and innovative strength. This is particularly convincing with its sustainable orientation, illustrated by new stand construction concepts, among other things, and the embedding of digital formats such as the EUROVINO Weinguide and the Digital Wine Exchange based on it," says Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe. EUROVINO is therefore an important component of the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Center's competence field of wine and perfectly complements the portfolio with the biennial Winzer-Service fair. Karlsruhe, located in the center of the four largest German wine-growing regions, offers the ideal setting for this.

Dr. Hermann Pilz, Chairman of the EUROVINO Advisory Board, has been involved in the conception of the new trade fair from the very beginning and emphasizes: "With the successful premiere event, we have succeeded in developing a platform from the industry for the industry, which offers a market-relevant range of exhibitors with a high level of attractiveness for trade visitors and plenty of space for high-quality exchange."

Cem Özdemir, Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, also took the opportunity to gain an impression of the new trade fair for wine on site. During talks and a tour of EUROVINO, he discussed relevant industry topics such as the cultivation of Piwi grape varieties and new methods for a healthy ecosystem in the vineyard with association representatives and exhibitors. In addition to these topics, dealcoholized wines and sparkling wines also played a role at EUROVINO, in the context of which Cem Özdemir emphasized in the run-up to his visit: "For me, a good glass of wine is also a part of quality of life. More and more people want to enjoy wine without alcohol from time to time and that is certainly not bad news. Anyone who wants to drink alcohol-free wine should also be able to do so in organic quality. However, dealcoholization is not yet permitted in the eco-regulation - you can't really explain that to anyone! We should change this quickly. I am therefore campaigning in Brussels and with colleagues in the member states for a modern and targeted adaptation of the eco-regulation. This step opens the door to an additional growing market, is in the interests of German viticulture and thus strengthens sustainable."

Exhibition stands and numerous visitors can be seen from above in the exhibition hall.
EUROVINO at Messe Karlsruhe celebrated a successful premiere on 3 and 4 March 2024.

Positive response from exhibitors and visitors

"I am highly satisfied with the premiere of EUROVINO - I will be happy to come back next year, as the visit was worthwhile for me," explains Christophe Meyer, Sommelier of the Year 2022 and 2023 Gault Millau, from Hotel Dollenberg in Bad Peterstal-Griesbach. This assessment is in line with many of the impressions of the well over 2,000 trade visitors who attended the premiere of EUROVINO in Karlsruhe, as well as those of the 305 exhibitors. These include David Klenert, owner of the Klenert winery in Kraichtal, who says with regard to his "new in-house exhibition on site": "Visitors celebrate the trade fair because they have enough time for discussions here. The feedback is all very positive, including about the connection and the location. We were able to deepen good contacts and exchange ideas with interested parties who will become new customers." Jost Hendrich from wine and delicatessen distributor Palorino from Bolzano summarized: "Sufficient space, plenty of daylight in the hall, good trade visitors, the location of Karlsruhe and the large catchment area - we are very satisfied." Vera Wiedemann, Sales Manager at Friedrich Kiefer KG/Ökologisches Weingut Schmidt from Kaiserstuhl, also draws a positive conclusion: "We had a lot of great conversations, without pressure, unhurried. The trade fair appeals to the right target group for us, because we reached not only regional customers, but customers from all over Germany. That suits us very well and we will definitely be back - EUROVINO is absolutely a trade fair with a promising future for us."

Trade visitor Dr. René Poss from Lager 15 Weinfachhandel from Karlsruhe confirms this positive assessment: "For me as a wine merchant, EUROVINO is a really great trade fair with short distances. It is a fantastic opportunity to visit my suppliers and sample new products. But I have also met interesting wholesalers and importers and I am very sure that we will be able to build lasting new business relationships here."

The satisfaction with the quality of the exhibitors is also evident in the results of the visitor survey: 98%, or almost every visitor, rated them with top marks at the premiere event. "It is also very pleasing that 92% of visitors to the trade fair would recommend EUROVINO to their colleagues, which confirms our concept with regard to the first event and spurs us on to develop EUROVINO further," emphasizes David Köhler, EUROVINO Project Manager.

Andreas Fritz from the Franz Fritz wine shop in Constance, who benefits from the large number of business partners on site, is also in a good mood: "I am enthusiastic about the personal atmosphere here, we have much more time to talk to our partners. I also find the overall atmosphere very positive and will definitely be back next year."

Well over 2,000 trade visitors took advantage of EUROVINO to interact with a total of 305 exhibitors and discover new wines.

Innovative program creates space for professional exchange and networking

With the Power Breakfast at the start of both days of the trade fair, the Networking Evening on the Sunday of the trade fair and the Expert Area, Messe Karlsruhe designed a deliberately accompanying and innovative program for EUROVINO that offered time and space for information, professional exchange and networking without distracting from the high-quality exhibitor portfolio. In the Expert Area, visitors were able to talk directly to recognized specialists on current topics for the retail and food service sectors at nine advice counters.

The networking evening on the Sunday of the trade fair also focused on exchange, with the highlight being the presentation of the Fair Wine Award, the international competition for sustainable and environmentally friendly wines, thus contributing to EUROVINO's overall concept of sustainability. A total of 18 wineries and wine producers from Germany, Austria and Italy were honored. The top award with 5 stars went to the Axel Bauer winery from Bühl/Baden with the 2022 Viognier 'Meisterstück'.

The award also included a competition in the retail and gastronomy sector for the first time: the "Wine Retailers of the Year" in various categories, the "Wine Bar of the Year", Freundschaft from Berlin, and the PFANDtastico 2024 Primitivo from Riegel Bioweine for the "Most Sustainable Packaging" were recognized.

The next EUROVINO will take place on March 9 and 10, 2025. Even before the end of the premiere event, numerous wineries have already confirmed their participation for the 2025 edition of EUROVINO.

People can be seen in exchange on a special area.
In the EUROVINO Expert Area, trade visitors from the retail, catering and hotel sectors were able to obtain new ideas and practical inspiration from experts at nine advice counters at any time.

Up-to-date information about the trade fair for wine can be found at any time at www.eurovino.info/en and on the social media channels LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook.
